French portraits painter, 1674-1735 French painter, active also in Spain. His father was the painter Antoine Ranc (1634-1716), under whom he must have trained. From 1697 he lived in Paris, where he continued his apprenticeship in Hyacinthe Rigaud's studio. After working for some years as Rigaud's assistant, he joined the Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in Paris in 1703 and reached the rank of academician as a portrait painter in 1707. As Rigaud's protege he worked for the French court, painting portraits of Louis XV (1718; Versailles, Cheteau) and almost certainly other members of the royal family as well as of the aristocracy. Edward Troye
American Artist . b.1808 d.1874 American painter of Swiss birth. Before 1822, his father, Jean-Baptiste de Troy, a sculptor of minor fame, moved his family to England, where Edward was instructed in drawing and perhaps painting. The animal painter Jacques-Laurent Agasse knew the family well. Troye wrote in 1857 that he was trained in London by the best masters and stated that he followed the style of George Stubbs and John N. Sartorius. In 1831 Troye arrived in Philadelphia, where he was employed as a magazine illustrator. The following year he exhibited animal subjects at the annual Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts exhibition and rapidly found patrons among racehorse owners. Domenico Puligo
(1492-1527) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance, active in Florence. His real name was Domenico di Bartolommeo Ubaldini. He was trained by Ridolfo Ghirlandaio, but acquired a style consistent with his contemporary Andrea del Sarto. He painted a Vision of Saint Bernard altarpiece, now in Walters' Gallery in Baltimore. He was also in demand for portraits. He is featured in Giorgio Vasari's Vite or biographies of artists. He excelled as a portrait painter. He befriended Andrea del Sarto ane worked with Ridolfo Ghirlandaio. His brother, Jacone Puligo was also a Renaissance painter.
